Movie reviews time. I am attempting to watch more movies, now that I know I enjoy them so much. Thank you Netflix.
#1) The Drop (Out in theaters, not yet on Netflix). If I haven’t already recommended this movie to you, I’m sorry. Go see it now. It is everything that a movie should be, in my opinion. It has subtlety, layers, great sound, fx, and lighting design, as well as a very well done story without fluff. The only thing I was left wondering was when the story was supposed to take place, because I don’t know of many Irish neighborhoods in Brooklyn. I also don’t know Brooklyn that well.
#2) Filth. This movie was incredibly triggering. It centers around a schizophrenic, cocaine addict, alcoholic cop/investigator in Scotland who stops taking his meds, molests and rapes women, and is all around an absolute narcissist. After a first watch and analysis I gathered that it was a bit of a commentary on people like that, almost to the point of being a character sketch. I had no sympathy for the main character, and spent most of the movie wishing he would die. That said, it is almost a comedy as well with the level of ridiculous shit that happens throughout and with the way they present different things (some song and dance, masks, hallucinations, etc.) I would say it is a good film, but I need to watch it again and hope that this time I wont be on the edge of my seat trying not to have an anxiety attack.
#3) Silver Lining. I thought this movie was a rather cute love story dealing with mental health, family, and marriage. It was really fluffy considering it centers around a man with bipolar disorder and rage problems, but I still enjoyed it. I am a sucker for anything two of the actresses in it do. I also found myself bursting out with laughter at times.
#4) Stardust. This was an incredibly hokey fantasy about a boy who has to become a man by winning over his true love. That said, I thought it was a cute love story that is definitely family friendly, while still being fun for me to watch. The only real theme it dealt with was love, and of course it ends like any fairy tale, with the wedding. Still I thought the concept and delivery were creative and enjoyable. The FX were also well done, IMO.
Have you seen these movies? What were your thoughts? What should I watch next?
