Prompt: What’s one thing you’re proud of?

I really need this prompt right now. I am going to try to come up with as many things as I can that I am proud of, because #selflove.

I am proud of:

  • Being alive. Depression is one hell of an illness. It runs in my family and both my late mother and her mother were suicidal at many points. I am proud of my ability and desire to get the help I need when I need it – therapy, group therapy, medication, coffee with a friend, codependents anonymous, etc.
  • Going to, graduating from, and graduating on time from university. Neither of my parents completed their degrees and my mother actually discouraged me from getting a four-year bachelors degree because she thought an associate degree or a technical field would be more beneficial. Even if she was right (I am not really using my degree these days) I am so proud that I was able to do this, with huge gratitude to my parents for supporting this endeavor in whatever way they could.
  • Going to Australia by myself. Yes, it was for a study abroad program, and yes I was freaking out most of the time leading up to it and the first day being there. But I did it. That first week I was by myself and after I landed and got checked into my hostel and “unpacked” for the week, I had absolutely zero plans. I freaked a bit, but got my wits about me (thanks to encouragement from a close friend) and got out there on my own.
  • Signing up for a three-day overnight scuba diving trip, by myself. I had never been scuba diving in the ocean before. I had barely been on/in the ocean before! I knew I couldn’t travel all the way to the other side of the world without scuba diving on the great barrier reef though. So I did! The fish were amazing and huge. Something I will never forget.
  • Working since I was 16. Most of them were short, medial jobs, but once I got into the habit of working it felt really important to me. It felt like independence, even if I was still getting help from my parents.
  • Being an out bisexual to my family. This took years and still feels uncomfortable after a year.
  • Painting and drawing again. After eight years of not doing it, it was a hurdle to jump to get back in to a groove.
  • Being open and honest. Continually readjusting course.

And that is all I can think of for now. Share what you are proud of in the comments below to keep the conversation going! <3

Mmm. There are many moments I feel a sense of pride. There are a few, I think, that stand out. I’m proud of myself for always giving life a fair shot. I am proud for enduring hardships I once thought would destroy me. I am proud of my son for growing into his own person, even where his interests and viewpoints don’t mesh with mine. I am proud of the good works I did for things I believe in and people I stand with.

Pretty simple sentences. Pretty simple truths.

You seem to have quite an explorer personality, which is sure to lead you to exciting places. My view is that all the best experiences in life grow out of the seeds of curiosity. So I think that to be curious, to have a drive to understand and question everything you’re faced with in life rather than just accepting it because it’s ‘the norm’, that’s something to be proud of.

Thank you for highlighting this for me. Exploration and curiosity are things I hold very close to my heart. It is easy to glaze over them as traits, so this reminder is a good one.
